Trying to Understand
filled with designer clothes
you don’t really need
do you not see that man
sleeping in the doorway?
When you drive to buy a bargain
halfway across town
don’t you realize
what it does to our world?
When you are excited about this
new gadget that takes you away
from others
are you not aware of the
blood that’s seeping out?
I am trying to understand.
It is just so hard for me to get.
How can you not see
the connections
that keep breaking my heart?
Forgive my exasperation!
Yet, I don’t understand
how you can not see
how you can close your heart.
I guess when we see
we have to change
we cannot help it
and change is hard
and it hurts.
Sometimes we don’t know
what change will help
there is so much pain
the little we can do
seems so utterly small.
And yet
if all of us would see
how the dots connect
maybe we could stop
and build a new world
one that is filled
with love
and with care.
A world where
no one sleeps on the street
a world where
everything is made
without blood
a world where
we don’t have to look away
to protect our hearts
a world where
our hearts don’t break
even when we look
because there is nothing
to break them.
Don’t you want to live
in a world like this?
How can I reach you?
How can I help you see?
How can you help me see?
How can we build that world?
Ach! what a powerfully moving poem! how well you have reached over the boundaries we all hide behind! and how it forces my heart to immediately follow your passionate call and stay with it!
i wish i knew some places to present this! i just now read it, so maybe a bit later some answer will come to me as to where i can post this to be read as widely as possible!
many loving kudos to you, rachel!
