The contradictions? According to conservatives, a lot of benefits are unearned. College spots reserved for minorities or women? Unearned. Redistribution of wealth through taxes is an especially hot button as the money is supposedly taken away from those who earned it and given to those who haven’t. And now liberals dare to point out that the same logic applies to marriage! We dare to question the sanctity of marriage, a sanctity that is precisely unearned and part of the privilege. Somehow when it comes to their pet projects, logic stops for many conservatives.
Ad hominem attacks? What have Bella’s looks to do with marital privilege? Correct: absolutely nothing! Yet, the commentators spent considerable amount of time looking for and displaying her pictures with snarky comments. Why? Because they don’t have any real arguments; arguments that would actually undermine the substance of ours. They can’t. That would disclose the contradictions in their argument. And they probably know that. So, they attack the author(s).
The funny thing is that at least one piece – on NewsBusters – is written in a way that helps us spread our ideas. Apparently, it is so obvious to the author that we’re wrong that she simply repeats our evidence. I wouldn’t be surprised if some conservative single would miss the sarcasm and realize that we have a point. After all, there have been critical voices on the conservative side: Should the state really have a hand in our relationships?
