Lessons from a hike
I didn’t want to carry the hike book with me, so I memorized the turns: Right-left-right. Easy enough! Plus, it was a well-known route, so I figured there’d be signs for the 6-mile loop. And there were! I did the right turn. The left turn was easy with a description of the hike on a sign. Then I got to the top. Lots of signs. They were all pointing to the left. But I was supposed to make a right turn, wasn’t I? Yet, all the signs (three of them!) were pointing to the left. I shrugged and went left. Maybe that left turn I made earlier didn’t really count. It quickly became clear, though, that the path was not the one I was supposed to be on – though the views were gorgeous and I didn’t regret it. So, instead of a loop, I ended up retracing my steps, enjoying every part of it. Once back in the car, I checked the map. Sure enough where all the signs told me to turn left, I should’ve gone right. I realized that this might be a good metaphor to keep in mind while transitioning! If everybody tells me to go down the beaten path, it might be worth while to check out the opposite direction…
