Fasting for a Moral Budget
I am fasting on April 5 and 6. No, i am not religious. This is not part of Easter. I am joining thousands of others across the US, including faith leaders, who are fasting to bring attention to the immorality of the federal budget being debated in Washington. Between the rich getting richer, corporations not paying taxes, and budget cuts being made on the backs of the poor and the middle class, i realized that it is time for some drastic actions. Like not eating for two days.
And i am the lucky one: I will have food again. I don’t (yet) have to make a choice between paying rent and buying food. I (for now) can still afford both. Aside from the fear that one day in the near future, i, too, will join the ranks of the hungry in this country – for poverty is only one downsizing away for many of us – it is outrageous that our moral priorities are so backwards in this country.
So, i am calling on Senators Boxer and Feinstein to help pass a budget that reflects their moral standing: Protecting the poor and taxing those who can afford it. I am also calling on others to join the fast to bring morality back to the US.
