Attacks Against Women
We knew it would be bad when Congress went further to the right but now we are starting to see how bad it’s really going to get. Aside from attacking the little reform of the sickness profiteering system, the Republicans with a little help from some backbone-free Democrats are hammering away at women’s rights. I see that as a direct attack against women. You’ve probably heard by now about the anti-choice bill. It’s not only anti-choice, it also sets us back decades of fighting to get legal acknowledgment that rape is violence no matter what. But HR3 isn’t the only attack. There is more sexist legislature in the works. Alternet counted nine new laws that directly attack women. And then they’ve started a smear campaign against Planned Parenthood because women’s right to choose is a horrible thing. Apparently. Can’t have that. If women can control our reproduction, we cannot be controlled. Of course abortion has been contested for a long time but this uptick in attacks is disconcerting. Plus with the economy still not working for so many people, you’d think that Congress would have different priorities. But maybe the next step will be to create jobs by forcing women out of the workforce. It would be doubtful that the Supreme Court would stop such a move since one of the Supremes claims that the equal protection clause doesn’t apply to us. How did we get transported back to the 1950s?!?
The ACLU also has a petition against H.R. 3 now. Not quite sure if it makes sense to sign multiple petitions but this bill is so outrageous, i can’t help making my opinion heard! (Hat tip to Feminist Philosophers’ Blog)
